Campaign continues to Save Beal Hey…

Shaw & Crompton Liberal Democrats are continuing the fight to SAVE BEAL HEY HWRC at Chandos Street, Shaw, after the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority GMWDA voted to close it.

The decision in principle to close Beal Hey was made at GMWDA’s meeting on 18th March. The meeting voted to continue with plans for the closure, ahead of further consultation and a final decision being made on 18th June.

Shaw & Crompton Liberal Democrats have led the campaign to keep the Beal Hey open, Cllr Mark Alcock presented a petition with 4,100 signatures from residents from Shaw & Crompton and across East Oldham to the meeting.

Mark said “This decision to close Beal Hey is completely wrong, if this is allowed to happen it would mean that the whole of Oldham Borough would only have Arkright Street to recycle their waste, some 160,000 residents, leaving Oldham as the only council in Greater Manchester to have just one site, the other councils have between 2 and 4 sites.

GMWDA have said that there’ll be more consultation, the consultation they have done already is a sham, like asking people in Oldham town centre about using Beal Hey, why did they not ask the people in Shaw town centre?

When 4,100 people sign a petition, I would say that that is a very loud message from local people to keep this site OPEN.

Cllr Mark Alcock believes that the closure of Beal Hey will lead to an increase in fly-tipping and a decrease in recycling”.

Mark also said, “We will be continuing to collect petition signatures and we will be asking the Oldham MBC to object to the closure and to do all it can to keep Beal Hey OPEN.

People can sign the petition online at www.SaveBealHey.org.uk and they download petition forms so they can collect more signatures from family and friends and anyone they think would be affected by the closure”.
